Racing legend Ayrton Senna is set to take his first steps into the world of Formula One after signing a two-year deal with an academy team, Aureus Academy.
The Italian has made a name for himself as a race driver at the age of just 21.
However, the former F1 driver will be the first driver from the Formula One family to join the Academy, which has been formed in collaboration with Formula One team Lotus, which is based in London.
Senna, who has already raced in the Formula E series, will make his Formula One debut in 2019.
“I’m so honoured to have been invited to join a Formula One academy,” he said.
“The fact that the Formula 1 Academy is working on such a high-profile project is very exciting.”
Senna also said he had made it clear to Lotus that his priority was the Formula one team and that he wanted to stay.
“We were very happy to hear that we would be staying in the team, and that we were the only ones interested in staying,” he added.
“So I was very happy when I heard that.
It was a real honour to be invited to Formula One.”
Sennas academy dealWith his deal with Aurees, Senna will become the second member of the Lotus Formula 1 team to move into the Formula F1 team.
The former Ferrari driver will join the Lotus F1 squad in 2020, the same year he will become part of the first ever Formula E racing team, Lotus Esereo.
The Lotus F2 team is based out of the UK, and is currently the third team in Formula One, following Mercedes and Ferrari.
It is currently fielding a factory-backed car for 2017 and a full-fledged simulator for 2018.
